My interview with Squadron Leader Geoffrey Wellum DFC was one of the first I ever did with a veteran of the war. I’ve posted a piece about meeting him and the publication of his memoir, First Light , on Talking Point, but here is the transcript of the conversation we had in his local pub back in February 2001.

As his bum hits the seat, it was like his face lit up. His hands went up to it, and he was on it. There were about 30 people watching and there wasn’t a dry eye. To mark the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, the BBC commissioned a one-off drama for TV called First Light, based on Geoffrey Wellum's book of the same name, in which Brian Kingcome was portrayed by the actor Ben Aldridge. The film was first shown by the BBC on 14 September 2010.

This is his beautifully and candidly written account of what it felt like to be part of a fighter squadron and to fly a Spitfire, the camaraderie, fear, confusion and excitement of flying and fighting, which eventually led to combat fatigue. Geoffrey Wellum, who was just 18 when he joined the RAF in August 1939, died at his home in Cornwall on Wednesday evening.

This officer has been with his squadron since the evacuation of Dunkirk. For Wellum and his comrades the rirst eased, as Spitfires were unsatisfactory nightfighters, and the squadron moved into winter quarters at Manston in Kent.
